The Brooklyn Family Travelers guide to Brooklyn!
The places and things I love most in my hometown.
TL;DR: I published a guide to Brooklyn!
I moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the winter of 2001 and lived there (and in Greenpoint) as a songwriter and musician (pre-kids) for 10 years. From there, I moved to Brooklyn Heights, then to Bushwick and later to leafy Park Slope where I now live with my husband, two growing boys and two dogs. It’s been just over 25 years which I still can’t believe, but so it goes.
When I first moved to Williamsburg, there were only a handful of shops on the main drag, Bedford Avenue. At that time (pre-Whole Foods, Apple and Gucci) it was hard to get a taxi to take you to Brooklyn and we'd spend evenings drinking beers on the defunct pier overlooking the city. You could walk for blocks without seeing any stores or restaurants. Friends lived in the coolest converted lofts and we played music in venues that ended up getting shut down or priced out of the neighborhood.
Much of Brooklyn, and New York in general, has the same story: changes, gentrification, growing pains, people getting priced out, etc. But Brooklyn is a place creatives have flocked to and created unique homes, businesses, art and music. It's a place full of people who grew up here and never wanted to leave, and those who left home knowing Brooklyn is where they want to be.
I created a locals guide to Brooklyn that’s for you if any of the below sound like you:
You’re coming to visit
You live in or near NYC and want to try some new things
You have visitors coming to town
You love Brooklyn Family Travelers and want to support my work :)
So, here’s a snippet of the guide - it is full of nearly 200 of my favorite things to do, eat, drink and see in Brooklyn. Looking for stuff to do with kids? There are also tons of great recommendations here for camps, classes, activities and more…all in Brooklyn.
Hope you’ll check it out! PS - the guide makes a great gift!
