Hi folks and Happy New Year!

I just returned from a wonderful trip sandwiched between two pretty awful events (I broke my toe right before we left and then had a horrible family emergency the day before we flew home) but there is nothing like day dreaming about better times and transporting all of us mentally to one of my favorite places in the world: Mexico City!

This will be the first of many travel guides to various cities we’ve traveled to. I hope you enjoy my notes and use them to daydream about a trip you might want to take someday or better yet, to book something! None of the links below are affiliate links, and the photos are my own, these are just suggestions of places we’ve enjoyed and hope you will too.

Last year we spent a week in Cancun on a house swap and day tripped to various resorts. Loving Mexico, and hearing so much about the vibrant Mexico City, we booked a trip over last Easter when the kids had off school and decided to check it out. Obsessed, hearts full and completely head over heels for the city, we returned again for New Years (sans kids) and had an epic trip. Here are some notes from the two trips - hope you enjoy!

MEXICO CITY

When we are on a trip, we try to find boutiques, markets and off the beaten path shops carrying pieces that are local to the place we’re visiting.

To get everything home, I usually carry ceramics and other breakables on the plane with me and check the rest by wrapping things in clothes in our suitcases.

This time, with a broken toe, a wheelchair to get through the airport and an overstuffed suitcase, we had to make last minute changes at the airport and ended up carrying on more than planned.

The ladies searching our luggage seemed to not speak any English and sadly my Spanish isn’t great (working on it!) so when they told me I needed to go to an office to talk to a supervisor to discuss some kind of vendor’s certificate (?) needed to bring back the wooden spoon rest (and hinted that I could miss my flight) I panicked and just handed it over.

Then, in perfect English, the agent said “thank you” and put it with her things.

So, here’s what I brought back from my trip and the one thing I didn’t ;)

Here's the breakdown from our trip in March with the kids, followed by ALL of my favorite things about CDMX, and my tips, tricks, recs and our full itinerary from both trips.
